Brian Sumner

Pro Skater and Founder of Skate Bible

Brian Sumner was born in Liverpool, England, and started skateboarding at the age of thirteen.

Not long after, Brian began winning contests and friend Geoff Rowley invited him across the pond to sunny Southern California. He quickly became sponsored by several companies, most notably Tony Hawk’s Birdhouse Skateboards, turning pro at age nineteen. Brian’s United States debut came by filming for Birdhouse’s video “The End,” and since then he has traveled the world. Brian spent three summers on Tony Hawk’s Gigantic Skate Park Tour traveling throughout the U.S. and also appeared in Tony Hawk’s trick tips videos. Magazine covers, interviews, movies, and various other skate-based signature items allowed Brian to reach all his professional goals early on in his career.

Brian encountered Jesus Christ in 2004 and since then has used his platform as a professional skateboarder to minister the Gospel. Brian is actively involved with “The Uprising,” a faith-based skateboarding ministry reaching communities through assemblies and arena festivals. He currently resides with his wife and two kids in Huntington Beach, California, and serves as a Deacon at The Sanctuary Church where he also preaches every Saturday night at Sanctuary “Generations”. Brian’s current sponsors include Reliance Skateboards, Truth clothing, AirSpeed, Independent trucks, Rocket wheels, Ninja bearings, Furnace skate shop, and Fender guitars.

"For the past 15-20 years many action sports ministries have been sharing the Gospel through surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, motorcross, wakeboarding and other sports. God has allowed us to make movies, host outreach events, and go on mission trips all over the world sharing the Gospel. It is now time to encourage, inspire, and mentor the next generation of young leaders who want to use their love of action sports, music, and film to share the Gospel!"

Chet Lowe

Outreach Pastor Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale & Director of Patmos Reality Discipleship

At thirteen, Chet Lowe to South Korea to build a church for a local village. The following year, to Liberia, West Africa. Only ten years later, he returned to Liberia as a full-time missionary. It was 1992 and Liberia was gripped by the turmoil of a civil war and my ministry was primarily to the child soldiers-boys who were as young as 8 who had been snatched from their families and forced to witness and commit unspeakable atrocities as part of the rebel forces. When the intermittent cease-fires came, these child soldiers, considered pariahs by their families and shunned by their villages, were left to wander the jungle in small bands as marauders. In His great wisdom, between his first and second trips to Liberia, the Lord strengthened his stamina and knowledge of His ways as he trained to compete in the 1988 Olympic Games.

Believing that God was calling him to serve as a missionary medical doctor,he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Before he entered medical school, God directed me to return to Liberia for at least a year. After a year, he returned home to marry Andrea, with whom he had been corresponding throughout my time in Liberia. The Bible encourages a year off of military service after marriage so after a year of preparation, Andrea, our five month old son and Chet returned to Liberia to expand their ministry to the child soldiers and their “war brides”, young girls raped and impregnated by the rebels. They also had the great joy of planting seven churches throughout Liberia and administering several international relief efforts to alleviate the abject suffering of this war-torn country.

Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale has been his home church since 1988 and in 1998 the Lord directed his steps to come on staff. As Pastor of the Family Ministry, he had the privilege to oversee many of the ministries that build up the Christian family including coordinating the foster care program- ChildShare, writing parenting curriculum, conducting pre-marital and marriage counseling while obtaining my Masters in Christian Counseling. Now, with eight children, it is their heartfelt desire to raise up the next generation for Jesus Christ. They believe their calling is to prepare the coming of the Lord by discipling a younger generation to be passionate for Jesus.

Dean Plumlee

National Director of Christian Surfers

God has a sense of humor.  In Oct of 1991 God placed a question in my heart, “Who will tell surfers that I love them?” The funny thing about that is I grew up in West Virginia (a landlocked state), had never touched a surfboard nor met a surfer.  So, you can imagine how it went when I told people that I was going to grow up and become a missionary to surfers.  But, God had a plan to reveal His ability to use even the weakest thing for HIS Glory.  And thus, the journey began.  This journey would lead me thru employment in surf shops, Bible teaching in drug rehab, living on Kauai, banging nails, cleaning housing, serving on Pastoral teams in local churches and many other unforeseen places all in an effort to connect surfers to Jesus.

In 1998 Amy joined this adventure as my wife.  Along the way we both picked up Bachelors degrees in Bible and a wealth of experience in how not to do ministry (our own mistakes).  We now have 3 children and a 20 something year old that feels like our own.  Starting with the 20 something they are; Ramon Santa Perez, Adyn Kealoha, Kael Kekoa Asher, and Muriel Leilani.

In 1994 I had my first contact with CSUS.  Amy and I began volunteering with the ministry in and came on staff in 2005.  In July 2007 the board installed me as the National Director.

Their is no greater place to be than serving Jesus alongside the amazing army of volunteers in CSUS.

Joel Parker

Snowboarder and Founder of Nations Foundation

Joel Parker is he director of The Nations Foundation. Joel grew up in Puyallap, Washington and spent much of his time snowboarding. As he says, “Snowboarding was my god.” At age 18 he was in a serious snowboarding accident and the doctors said he would not be able to snowboard and so Joel moved to the beach to surf. While at a local surf shop, the owner gave him a copy of Changes and said he needed to watch the film. Being a new Christian, Changes had impacted Joel and confirmed his new decision for Christ. Shortly after Joel met Bryan Jennings and was welcomed on staff at Walking On Water in 2003 as Director of the Northwest and Outreach Coordinator. In 2006 Joel felt called out of Walking On Water in order to start The Nations Foundation. Joel has been inspired by Walking On Water and as a result his new organization will be reaching the snowboard community in the same way that Walking On Water has been reaching the surf community. The Nations Foundation is a Christian organization committed to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with this generation’s snowboard community through films and camps.

The Lord also uses these two in incredible ways through the wakeboarding industry as they share testimonies at wakeboarding events around the US.

Raul Ries

Pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills

Paster Raul Ries hasn’t led a perfect life. The first couple decades of his life were filled with anger. Ries was involved in many fights, and when he was 18 Ries was arrested for almost killing a man. But God had a plan for Ries.

On Easter Sunday in 1972, Ries’ wife was going to leave him, at the time, abusive husband. Ries was planning on killing her and his children. While his wife was at church, Ries went to his home, loaded his rifle and began destroying his hous. While destroying his house, Ries accidently turned on the TV when he struck it with his rifle.

Pastor Chuck Smith was on the TV talking about Jesus Christ, and when Ries heard what was being said he began to change. Ries accepted Christ.

Ries’ life was saved. Ries is now the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Valley and president of Somebody Loves You Ministries.

Tim Byrne

Professional Freestyle Skateboard Evangelist

Tim Byrne, one of the pioneers in skateboard ministry has been traveling and sharing the Gospel for 10yrs. After his radical salvation in 2000, Tim joined Manna Skateboards, which was the first company to book and market a skateboard company to the Christian public. While this was a new concept, God used this ministry in a big way. The tours in the early 2000’s would often place these skaters with the top Christian artists such as Pillar, Newsboys, TobyMac, POD, Skillet, Kutless, etc. Within a year of joining Manna Tim turned pro and placed in the top 5 in the world at his first Pro Freestyle contest! Things were moving fast with a lot of opportunities to do many things. Tim’s focus was not to be glorified, but to see people come to know Jesus and to share the love that changed his life forever.

The past 10 years Tim has had the privilege to see hundreds of 1000’s come to Jesus and share the gospel in nearly every state in the U.S. as well as overseas. Today Tim is on the forefront as a speaker and pro skater to a world that needs Jesus, he has partnered with Reach Your City in Nashville who helps connect him with local churches trying to reach their communities for Christ. Brian O'Rourke

Founder of Team Faith

In 1994 the Holy Spirit got a hold of Brian O' in a drastic way! While working at a strip club in Tennessee, Brian had already figured out on his own that drinking, smoking, doing drugs and yes, even having sex was simply NOT working for him in his life. Having quit those vices on his own and in his own strength, Brian still found himself empty and longing for something more. the allure of money from the strip club and the appeal of looking at naked girls all night was just not enough. So, one day while at his parents house his step-father Ron came into his room and addressed his concern for him. Ron told him about the saving grace of God through His Son Jesus and asked if Brian wanted to receive Him as his personal Lord and Savior. Reluctantly, Brian said "yes" to Christ and promptly gave his 2 weeks notice at the club.

It was in that 2 weeks and the months after that Brian truly started to understand who Christ was and what He did for him. A mere 3 months after Brian got saved he was at his parents house watching watercraft racing on ESPN2 when the Holy Spirit got a hold of him again! There was one particular Pro racer that was dominating 2 classes on the IJSBA National Watercraft Racing circuit. And although Brian found himself idolizing him, everytime that rider got onto the podium he was arrogant, boisterous and NOT humble. Brian believed he heard the Holy Spirit speak and He showed him how if that racer would talk about Jesus rather than himself, he could be a great role model and witness to all the other thousands (if not millions) of fans that watched pro Watercraft racing!

Brian didn't have a jetski, nor did he have much of a plan to implement to try to reach this rider, so he went to his church for advise. Unfortunately, the church had non! The fact was that motorsports ministry was in its infancy stage of development and the church just hadn't had any experience nor calling to reach beyond the walls to that particular group of people. But Brian heard the Great Commission where Jesus said in Matthew 28: 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” He realized that 'Nations" are people groups that have their own cultures and own languages and that these jetski people are in a sense, a nation that needed to be reached for Jesus!

So, Brian bought a used ski, painted it a color that nobody else had, came up with the name "Team Faith" (he figured everybody has faith in something - even if its in themselves!), designed a logo, painted a big cross on the front of his ski, and set out to hone his skills by racing and praying at local and regional races in Tennessee and North Georgia, all in an effort to one day reach the young athlete who God placed on his heart.

Miraculously, through a series of amazing events, Brian O' found himself at the World Finals of Watercraft Racing in Lake Havasu City, AZ just a year and half later. He asked the sanctioning body if they had anyone to say a prayer at the Riders Meeting and when they did not, Brian O' volunteered. Knowing that the racer he was called to reach would be there on the last day of competition for the week, Brian was nervous to say the prayer. But he managed to make it through and as all the Pros were filing out of the Riders Meeting, one stayed behind to talk with Brian. You guessed it! It was the rider that God told him to reach out to! After a time where Brian gave the rider his testimony, that rider revealed that though his brother and another athlete on the tour, he indeed had accepted Christ! Brian and that rider were baptized together that weekend and Brian wound up praying for 850 riders representing 32 countries!

The rest, as they say, is history, and today the ministry that God birthed in 1994 called Team Faith is a non-profit multi-faceted Outreach Ministry that impacts people who are enthusiastic about Action Sports. Started in the Pro Personal Watercraft Racing Industry and have migrated to the Pro Motocross Racing and Freestyle Motocross Industries respectively. Team Faith's vision is to establish evangelism teams of action sports athletes led by "Pit Pastors" (Chaplains), to infiltrate professional racing circuits and other action sports events.

In addition to ministering and competing on the National Arenacross Series, Team Faith provides Spiritual Services for the IJSBA World Finals of Watercraft Racing, GNCC Racing Series, and the Summer X-Games. We have also competed on the Supercross Series with Kevin Johnson as our premier rider. Kevin Johnson is the defending 2008 X Games Gold Medalist in the Speed and Style Competition. 2011 saw the addition of Kelly Smith as our Arenacross/Supercross rider and he went on to finish 5th on the series with 2 wins. Our UTV racing efforts have brought us the 2009 GNCC Lites Limited UTV Championship with driver/Pit Pastor Chuck Lemaster and navigator Brian O'Rourke and we are poised to win our second National GNCC Championship this year in the UTV's. Our FMX team has performed over 250 evangelistic jump shows at festivals, fairs, corporate events, churches and youth groups all over the country. And this past season founder and president brian O' even started racing his watercraft again with some success! He raced the Pro Hydro-X Tour which was six stops throughout the Southeast and managed to win 4 races and 3 Overalls and the Championship in the Sport Spec class.
Brian currently resides in Mount Juliet, TN right outside of Nashville and is married to his wife of six years Monica, who just completed her Ph.D in Health and Human Performance from Middle Tennesse State University. The two are dedicated to serving Jesus in the unique ways that He has called them to.

Heidi Lemmon

Skatepark Assosation & NSSA

Heidi Lemmon was warned not to go to Nepal. It was 2005 and the country's political instability had prompted the U.S. government to issue a travel advisory.

But Lemmon, executive director of SkatePark Association International, was on a mission. Nepalese skateboarder Ram Koirala had worked hard to establish a skate park in Pokhara, Nepal, and had made significant progress. Then, in 2005, Nepalese bureaucrats stymied his plans. He sought help from Lemmon.

Lemmon, with skate park builder Stephanie Mohler of Airspeed Skateparks, hopped a plane to Nepal, where she attended meetings with Koirala and government officials to move the park plan forward. "Sometimes when you come from far away, people are a little more cooperative," she says.

Soon after she returned to Venice, Nepal's King Gyanendra declared a state of emergency and suspended civil liberties.

Lemmon is equally committed to local teenagers who want skate parks, for reasons that reach far beyond providing the kids with something to do.

A former product designer with clients such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Lemmon got involved after her son and his friends were harassed by police for skateboarding on public property in Santa Monica.
